New Peak

Calico Basin

New Peak is one of the summits in the Calico Basin section of Red Rock Canyon and is an enjoyable scrambling route with excellent views of Calico Basin and the surrounding peaks. This is they gray mountain on the west side of Kraft Mountain. New Peak is in the La Madre Mountain Wilderness Area and is also known as El Hijo, Spanish for “the son.” Gloves may come in handy on this hike.

Calico Basin Recreation Area is a popular rock climbing, hiking destination within the larger Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area that spans 5,700 acres. Fragile and rare springs are found throughout the area, which is filled with giant sandstone formations.
