Red Rock Canyon

Conservation Area

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area lies in Nevada’s Mojave Desert. It’s known for geological features such as towering red sandstone peaks and the Keystone Thrust Fault, as well as Native American Petroglyphs.

Red Rock Escarpment: The great Sandstone cliffs at Red Rock are made up of Aztec Sandstone test link which formed about 180 – 190 million years ago. They are comprised of lithified sand dunes that formed in a vast desert that covered a large part of the southwestern United States during the Jurassic time. The red color in the outcrops is due to presence of iron oxide that was exposed to the elements and caused the iron minerals to oxidize (rust), resulting in red, orange, and brown-colored rocks.

Red Rock Canyon spans more than 195,000 acres that is visited by more than two million people each year for its world-class Hiking, Rock Climbing and Mountain Biking . The 13-mile scenic loop drive has a visitor center, multiple day-use areas and a campground. Read More…
