Grapevine Canyon is one of the finest Petroglyph sites in Southern Nevada and is located in Grapevine Canyon at the base of Spirit Mountain. The rock glyphs were created between about 1200 and 1800 AD, and reflects the cultural significance of the surrounding mountains, still considered sacred by several Southwest tribes. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 15, 1984 and the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument was established on March 21, 2023 and spans approximately 506,814 acres of land.
Spirit Mountain (Known as Avi Kwa Ame in Mojave the language) is considered to be among the most sacred places on Earth by the Mojave, Chemehuevi, and some Southern Paiute people. It is also important to Tribal Nations and Indigenous Peoples including the Cocopah, Halchidhoma, Havasupai, Hopi, Hualapai, Kumeyaay, Maricopa, Pai Pai, Quechan, Yavapai, and Zuni Tribes.
